People of Wyma: Björn Peters

bjorn peters wyma

As Wyma’s European Sales Manager, Björn Peters has led the sales team across Europe and the UK for two years. With a strong background of senior sales and account management roles spanning over 21 years, Björn’s sound knowledge of the industry covers both the broader end-to-end view as well as the finer idiosyncrasies.

We spoke to Björn about life at Wyma Europe and learned a little about what makes him tick.

Tell us a bit about your background.

I was born in the city of Deventer in The Netherlands, but we moved around the country a lot due to my father’s job. I ended up graduating from the Hogeschool Zuyd in Sittard with a bachelor’s in Marketing & Sales and was lucky enough during my studies to travel to the UK and the US for internships. My interest in travel combined with an eagerness to get to know people and assist with their needs rather naturally made me flow into the sales profession. I later decided that I wanted to add an MBA and strengthen some of my skills, which I did in 2002 from Webster University.

Before joining Wyma I was a Global Key Account Manager for a leading company in the design and production of baking solutions as well as mixing and aeration technology. When Wyma approached me in 2018 with this challenging role I decided to make the move, and I’ve been with the company for almost two years now.

What does a normal workday look like for you (if such a thing exists)?

You are right it does not exist! In general, I spend around half of my time visiting our customers in various countries around the region. This is by far the best part of the job, getting to see, feel and smell it all in action but also discuss, plan and adapt solutions side-by-side with the customers.

I also spend a lot of time with the European engineering team, discussing lay-outs we are working on and relaying our progress back to the customers. Wrapping up the day usually involves calling our sales staff based in various countries to learn about their days. When being remote I think it is good to stay in regular contact; after all, we are one team.

What do you enjoy about working at Wyma?

You never really know what each day will bring, just you will give it your all to be of service to the customers. The Wyma team works in this respect and you can see it in the quality of what we do. In the past, I have had the privilege to lead sales teams, and the most important thing for me is always that we do it together. It makes us stronger, not only as a sales team but as a company, and places us in a better position to help our customers obtain an optimum result.

What do you think matters most to our customers?

I think what matters most to our customers is reliability. They have companies to run, crops to harvest, customers to satisfy, volumes and quality to supply. When we as Wyma give them the reliable solutions they need we are truly living up to our mission of being the partner and helping our customers get the best from every harvest.

Can you describe the most satisfying job or work activity you have undertaken at Wyma?

It’s always difficult when you’re asked the “most” question, but one example of something I’ve found very satisfying is the introduction of our Pumpkin Brusher to mainland Europe. Many people know Wyma for the Vege-Polisher™ or the complete line solutions we offer, however we do also supply single pieces of equipment. The Pumpkin Brusher is an extremely effective machine, and I’m thrilled to see it in action in Europe.

This year has been incredibly difficult given the disruption caused by Covid-19. Helping our service department meet the needs of our customers during such a challenging time, and even getting hands on with the equipment myself, has also been very satisfying. It’s a very unique situation, but the Wyma team has adapted to it well and kept our customers happy.

What fills your time when you’re not working?

I like to spend my time off with my family and I love to travel, visiting unknown cities, going to museums and eating nice meals. I also like to take walks in the area near my house called the “Veluwe” or just sit on the couch and read a good book.

To speak to Björn or one of our team about your post-harvest needs, don’t hesitate to get in touch.
