Is your pack-house water efficient?

Water is a precious resource. In order to ensure that generations to come still have access to it like we do today, it is essential that we all do our part to conserve water. The UN has predicted that if we continue as is, two-thirds of the world’s population will be living in water stressed conditions by 2025. By taking the time to be water efficient now, we can make a huge difference in the future.

We encourage all growers and pack-house specialists to be water efficient in their processes. Water efficiency is the act of reducing the wastage of water wherever possible. In order to reduce water wastage, you need to be aware of how much water it takes to effectively complete the job at hand. Once you know this amount, you can turn off the water flow beyond that level.

In a pack-house situation, water can be reused and recycled in the earlier stages of a line. Your equipment provider will understand the water needs of each piece of equipment. They will be able to identify when filtering is required, and the best way to recycle water to minimise fresh water use. A water management system is a simple, cost effective solution to cut down on the amount of water used every day.

For some pieces of equipment (e.g. Flumes) water is returned to a holding tank and then recycled through the same equipment. In other areas (e.g. Vege-Polishers), a water recycling tank with a filter is essential as the water needs to be filtered to remove the dirt and debris before it can be reused in the line.

We understand that in some parts of the world, paying for water is the norm, but even if there is no direct cost, there will always be pumping and disposal costs. Being water efficient is not only helping to save the environment, but it can also save you money.
